MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972

SEC. 65-3-15. Additions to and deletions from state highway system; Laws, 1962, chs. 420, 425, 426, 429, 431, 433-435, 437-439, 442-444.

Additions to state highway system.

(1) The mileage of the highways specifically designated in subsections (4) and (5) herein is in addition to the total mileage limitation of eight thousand, six hundred miles which is set out in section 65-3-3.

(2) The highways specified in subsections (4) and (5) hereof are hereby designated as state highways and shall be placed under the jurisdiction of the state highway commission for construction and maintenance as hereinafter provided, and such highways, together with the highways designated in sections 65-3-3 and 65-3-5, and any and all other laws adding links to the designated state highway system, are declared to be the state highway system of Mississippi.

(3) The state highway commission is hereby authorized and empowered to number the highways specified in subsection (4) hereof on the state highway system and renumber any presently numbered highways, except those numbered as United States numbered highways, and is further authorized to maintain, construct, take over and assume jurisdiction of the highways specified in subsection (4) hereof in the same manner and upon the same terms and conditions as set out in sections 65-1-75, 65-3-3, 65-9-1, and 65-9-3.

(4) Particular districts enumerated:

1. Extend the Smithdale Highway No. 570 from its intersection with old U. S. Highway No. 51 in Summit, thence in a northeasterly direction to Felder's Camp Ground, thence in a northerly direction to intersect Mississippi Highway No. 583 at or near Ruth.

2. Beginning at the southeast corner of Township 2 North, Range 9 East (15-50 chains north of southeast corner thereof), extending southwest through Township 1 North, Range 9 East, continuing through Township 10 North, Range 14 West (west of St. Stephens Meridian), and leaving Smith County in the Northwest Quarter of Section 32, Township 10 North, Range 14 West, containing fourteen miles, more or less.

3. Beginning at the intersection of Highway No. 18 at or near the residence of Will Houston and make what is known as the Sylvarena Loop coming back into Highway No. 18 at or near the Sylvarena Masonic Lodge.

4. Beginning at the intersection of the public road with old Highway No. 51 on the north line of Section 25, Township 3 North, Range 7 East, Pike County, Mississippi, and running thence west approximately one mile to the intersection of the public road that runs north and south and running north on said public road to the intersection of U. S. Highway No. 24.

5. A road connecting with Mississippi Highway No. 16, at a point approximately six and one-half miles east of Carthage, Leake County, Mississippi, running thence south and crossing the Pearl River at or near the "Battle Bluff" Bridge to the George Oliphant residence; thence southeasterly in front of the Mrs. Sally Sanders residence to the Edinburg-Hillsboro Road; thence east along said Edinburg-Hillsboro Road, passing in front of the J. O. Hollis farm residence to a point where said Edinburg-Hillsboro Road intersects the Ebenezer-Laurel Hill Road; thence southeast along said Ebenezer-Laurel Hill Road to Ebenezer Cemetery; thence east along an existing road to State Highway No. 427.

6. Beginning at a point on the downtown business route of Mississippi Highway No. 1 at or near its intersection with the northerly corporate limits of the City of Greenville, Washington County, on what is now designated as North Broadway Street in said city; thence in a southerly direction to a point at or near the intersection of U. S. Highway No. 82 with the southwesterly corporate limits of said City of Greenville; thence in an easterly direction to a point at or near the intersection of Mississippi Highway No. 1 with the southerly corporate limits of said City of Greenville.

7. A highway connecting the Greenville Port and Industrial Area with Highway U. S. 82 between Greenville and Greenville, Mississippi, River Bridge in Washington County, Mississippi, Highway Project PWA 1273 (Contract 8) Washington County at approximate station 327 + 50, bearing N 6990.85, E 13110.14 in Section 32, Township 18 North, Range 8 West. Highway is approximately 3735 feet in length, in northwesterly direction connecting to the industrial area in vicinity of point N 8500.00, E 9800.00 in Section 10, Township 18 North, Range 9 West. Bearings refer to grid north, local grid and coordinates are plane coordinates, local grid.

8. Beginning approximately four miles east of Nettleton, Mississippi, where old Mississippi Highway 6 separates from new Mississippi Highway 6, thence running northeast along old Mississippi Highway 6 to its intersection with Mississippi Highway 371.

(5) Particular counties enumerated:

1. Beginning at North Carrollton, Carroll County, Mississippi, thence in a northwesterly direction to the Carroll-Grenada county line, to there connect with Highway 35, and this link of road is designated an integral part of said Highway 35.

The state highway commission is hereby authorized to maintain, construct, take over and assume jurisdiction of the above-designated highway in the same manner and upon the same terms and conditions as set out in sections 65-1-75, 65-3-3, 65-9-1, and 65-9-3.

2. Beginning at a point on a state highway at or near Willows, Mississippi, in Claiborne County, and running thence in a southerly direction for a distance of approximately four miles to intersect a road running from Romola School to Highway 18 through Insmore, Mississippi, all in Claiborne County, Mississippi.

The state highway commission is hereby authorized and empowered to number the above-designated highway on the state highway system and renumber any presently numbered highways, except those numbered as United States numbered highways, and is neither authorized nor required to maintain, construct, take over and assume jurisdiction of the above-designated highway in the same manner and upon the same terms and conditions as set out in sections 65-1-75, 65-3-3, 65-9-1, and 65-9-3.

3. Beginning at its intersection with Interstate Route 20 at or near Van Winkle and thence northeasterly a distance of approximately twelve miles to intersect with Interstate Route 55 at or near the Hinds-Madison county line.

The Mississippi State Highway Commission is hereby authorized to construct said section of highway with federal-aid inter-state highway funds and matching state highway funds and to maintain said section on completion of said construction.

4. Beginning at the intersection of United States Highway 61 and Mississippi Highway 552 in Jefferson County, Mississippi, thence running in a westerly direction approximately four and five-tenths miles on the road known as the "Lorman to Rodney highway."

The state highway commission is hereby authorized and empowered to number the above-designated highway on the state highway system and renumber any presently numbered highways, except those numbered as United States numbered highways, and is further authorized, but in no event shall said highway commission be authorized or required to maintain, construct, take over and assume jurisdiction of the above-designated highway in the same manner and upon the same terms and conditions as set out in sections 65-1-75, 65-3-3, 65-9-1, and 65-9-3.

5. Beginning at the end of state maintenance on State Highway No. 305 at or near Thyatira, thence running in a southeasterly direction through Teckville approximately eighteen miles to College Hill at or near the University of Mississippi campus. [A portion of the highway described was deleted from the state highway system by Laws, 1966, ch. 503, Sec. 1. See section 65-3-19 under heading "Additional deletions from state highway system." ]

The state highway commission is hereby authorized and empowered to number the above-designated highway on the state highway system and renumber any presently numbered highways, except those numbered as United States numbered highways, and is further authorized to maintain, construct, take over and assume jurisdiction of the above-designated highway in the same manner and upon the same terms and conditions as set out in sections 65-1-75, 65-3-3, 65-9-1, and 65-9-3.

(6) The Mississippi State Highway Commission shall retain and maintain as state highways any portions of U. S. Mississippi Highways Nos. 11, 51, 80 and 90 that have been replaced and the new portion constructed as a part of the interstate highway system, and the same shall be continued to be maintained as a part of the Mississippi state highway system until July 1, 1964, at which time they shall revert to the counties for maintenance, as is now provided for by law.

Deletions from state highway system.

(7) Particular counties enumerated:

1. The following described link of state highway in Leake County, Mississippi, being a section of FAS Route 528 (Rosebud-Walnut Grove Road), is hereby deleted from designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission:

Commencing at the intersection of Mississippi 488 in the Southeast Quarter of Section 33, Township 10 North, Range 9 East, and extending southwesterly via FAS Route 528 to Mississippi Highway 35 at Walnut Grove.

2. The following described link of state highway in Leake County, Mississippi, is hereby deleted from the designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission of Mississippi and returned to the jurisdiction of the board of supervisors of Leake County, Mississippi:

Commencing at intersection of Mississippi Highway 16 in NW 1/4 of Section 21, Township 10 North, Range 6 East, and extending northwesterly via FAS Route 520 to Leake-Madison County line near the south line of Section 31, Township 11 North, Range 6 East; extending thence northerly to road intersection in SE 1/4 of section 30, Township 11 North, Range 6 East.

3. The following described link of state highway in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, is hereby deleted from the designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission of Mississippi and returned to the jurisdiction of the board of supervisors of Tishomingo County, Mississippi:

That portion of Mississippi Highway 30 in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, commencing at the Natchez Trace Parkway and extending in an easterly direction to the Alabama state line.

4. The following described link of state highway is hereby deleted from designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission:

Beginning at Roberts Store in Monroe County, which is located northeast of the intersection of old Mississippi Highway 6 and new Mississippi Highway 6, which said intersection is approximately four miles east of Nettleton, Mississippi, from said point at Roberts Store running northward to the Itawamba County line.

5. The following described link of state highway in Smith County, Mississippi, is hereby deleted from the designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission of Mississippi and returned to the jurisdiction of the board of supervisors of Smith County, Mississippi:

Beginning at a point at or near Mize and running in a northerly direction to intersect Highway No. 35 at or near Luckey's Store.

6. The following described link of Mississippi State Highway No. 428 in Sunflower and Humphreys Counties, Mississippi, is hereby deleted from designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission:

That portion of Mississippi State Highway No. 428 in Sunflower and Humphreys Counties from a point on U. S. Highway 49-W south of Inverness in Sunflower County, to its intersection with Mississippi State Highway No. 7 at the Four Mile Community in Humphreys County, being approximately seven miles in length.

7. The following described link of state highway in Tate County, Mississippi, is hereby deleted from designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission:

That portion of Mississippi Highway No. 301 running from Arkabutla to Savage, all in Tate County, Mississippi.

8. The following described link of state highway in Sharkey County, Mississippi, is hereby deleted from designation as a state highway and is hereby removed from the jurisdiction of the state highway commission:

That part of Highway No. 16 beginning at the east end of the concrete bridge over Little Sunflower River, thence in a southeasterly direction nine miles, more or less, to the bridge over Big Sunflower River one mile southwest of Holly Bluff, Mississippi.

9. That portion of the state highway system beginning at the east corporate limits of Iuka and extending easterly on F. A. S. Route 957 to junction in east part of Section 22, Township 3 South, Range 11 East, Tishomingo County, Mississippi, a distance of approximately seven and six-tenths miles is hereby deleted from the system of state designated highways.

10. That portion of the state highway system beginning at a point on Mississippi Highway 3 at Satartia and running thence to Holly Bluff, all in Yazoo County, is hereby deleted from the system of state designated highways.
