MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972
As Amended

SEC. 75-56-17. Specifications.

(1) Permanent types of antifreeze or engine coolants of the glycol type shall meet American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard specifications set forth in D3306 for physical and chemical requirements or such other standard or standards as the State Chemist deems acceptable. The requirements are as follows:
Property Specified Values Methods
Specific gravity 60/60 F. 1.110 to 1.145 D1122
Freezing point, 50 vol. % sol +34 F. or lower D1177
Pour point, undiluted, min. 0 F. D97
Boiling point, undiluted, min. 300 F. D1120
Boiling point, 50 vol. %, min. 226 F. D1120
Effect on automotive finish no effect D1882
Ash content, max. wgt. % 5 D1119
pH, undiluted 5.5 to 11.0 D1287
Reserve alkalinity, min. 10 D1121
Water, wgt. %, max. 5 D1123

The antifreeze or engine coolant shall also meet the performance requirement in D3306, i.e., the corrosion in glass test as conducted by D1384. The limitations are as follows:
Material Weight Loss
Copper 10 mg/spec. max.
Solder 30 mg/spec. max.
Brass 10 mg/spec. max.
Steel 10 mg/spec. max.
Cast iron 10 mg/spec. max.
Aluminum 30 mg/spec. max.

(2) Nonpermanent alcohol base antifreeze or engine coolants shall bear labels which describe to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce and the State Chemist, the chemical composition, the dangers to the mechanical parts of the equipment the antifreeze is to be used in, and the hazards to the operators and/or passengers using the equipment. The type of antifreeze or engine coolant must meet the following physical properties:
ASTM Method Methyl Alcohol Ethyl Alcohol
D1122 specific gravity 20/20 c. 0.79 + 1.0
D1177 freezing point, 50% vol.
D1177 water sol. - 40 C. max. - 40 C. max.
D1120 boiling point, undiluted 70 c. max.
D2551 vapor pressure, 20 c.
undiluted 96 mm hg. max.
D92 flash point, open cup,
undiluted 15 c. min.

The other properties claimed on the label will be tested by appropriate ASTM methods and must agree with the label within the tolerances allowed by the ASTM method or tolerances allowed by good analytical precision.

(3) Materials such as chemical salts, hydrocarbon based compounds and sugars shall not be used as antifreezes or engine coolants.
